Saxo

Founded in Copenhagen in 1992, Saxo Bank is a fully licensed Danish investment bank offering online trading and investing across a vast range of global markets. It serves over 1.5 million clients worldwide, manages more than EUR 115 billion in client assets, and provides access to 71,000+ financial instruments from a single account. In March 2026, Swiss private banking institution J. Safra Sarasin Group completed a 70% acquisition of Saxo, further reinforcing its institutional standing.

Saxo is best suited to active traders and intermediate-to-advanced investors who want professional-grade tools and broad market access. Long-term investors will find it capable, particularly via the simpler SaxoInvestor platform. Complete beginners may find the platform depth overwhelming, and those who rely on MetaTrader (MT4/MT5) or want fractional shares will need to look elsewhere.

Saxo Bank holds a full Danish banking licence and is designated a Systemically Important Financial Institution (SIFI) — meaning it is subject to the same rigorous oversight as a traditional bank. It is regulated across 15 jurisdictions, including by the Danish FSA (primary), the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Switzerland’s FINMA, and Australia’s ASIC. It carries an S&P A– investment-grade credit rating.

Note: Depending on your country of residence, you will be onboarded to a specific Saxo entity. Protections, leverage limits, and compensation coverage vary by jurisdiction. Always verify which entity governs your account before depositing funds.

  • EU Investor Compensation Scheme — additional EUR 20,000 protection for eligible EU clients

Saxo uses tiered margin requirements — as position size grows, so does the required margin percentage. Saxo introduced formal Lombard loans (borrowing against your existing stock portfolio) in July 2025. Financing rates are based on benchmark interbank rates (e.g. SOFR for USD) plus a Saxo markup, with a floor of zero percent. Rates are updated regularly and published on Saxo’s website.

Saxo offers three platforms under one account login — no extra cost to switch between them. SaxoInvestor is clean and beginner-friendly. SaxoTraderGO is polished and capable for active traders. SaxoTraderPRO is powerful but more complex, designed for professionals. The learning curve scales with the platform chosen.

A demo account can be activated instantly with no credit card required.

Saxo provides a solid but not exhaustive education offering:

  • Platform walkthrough videos and downloadable guides
  • Market analysis and commentary from in-house SaxoStrats analysts
  • Webinars and expert insights accessible through the platform
  • The free demo account itself is arguably the best learning tool — real market conditions, zero financial risk

Saxo’s education resources are more suited to traders with some baseline knowledge. True beginners may benefit from supplementing with external learning before diving in.

Saxo Bank is a well-regulated, highly capable broker with exceptional market breadth and bank-grade security. Its fee structure has improved significantly — no custody fees, no inactivity fees, and competitive FX conversion — making it more accessible than it once was. The three-platform approach means both newer investors and seasoned professionals can find a suitable environment within the same account.

Where Saxo falls short is in simplicity for absolute beginners. The absence of fractional shares, the complexity of tiered pricing, and the lack of MetaTrader support mean it is not the right fit for everyone.
